About the archive online catalogue

The archives and manuscripts of the Cadbury Research Library consist of some 4 million items which provide a rich resource for teaching, learning and research.

The archive catalogue allows you to search for information about the archives and manuscripts held at the Cadbury Research Library. Once you have found what you are looking for, make a note of the finding number of the document and visit the Cadbury Research Library to view the item, or request a copy through our reprographics service.

The archive catalogue includes both collection/fonds level descriptions about the majority of our holdings and accompanying detailed catalogues of many of these collections. Each collection/fonds level description gives a summary of content as well as information about historical context and background. It also provides information about the availability of full catalogues or other finding aids. Where a full catalogue is not yet available in our online catalogue, in some cases there may be a link from the collection/fonds level entry to the catalogue available instead as a PDF document. To open a PDF document you may need Acrobat Reader which is free to download.

Although new catalogues are added on a regular basis to this archive catalogue, information about some of our collections is not yet available online. However, for more comprehensive information about the range of collections which we hold, please see the summary guide to our collections on our website or contact us by email

The archive catalogue also includes a small number of catalogues of collections held at the Shakespeare Institute Library in Stratford-upon-Avon. The catalogue records indicate the different location and researchers should contact that library directly to arrange to consult the materials there. For contact details and opening hours, please check the Shakespeare Institute Library web pages.

Please note that this archive catalogue does not contain details of the rare books held in the Cadbury Research Library. If you wish to search for books, please use the University of Birmingham library catalogue.
