| Description | Miscellaneous printed materials relating to the Catholic Apostolic Church made by the Cousland family who were members of this church.
These primarily comprise pastoral instructions and pastoral letters, sermons and other texts, mostly printed for private circulation among members (and issued primarily for the benefit of those unable to hear them) by churches in England and Scotland and also in North America. The churches represented in this collection include Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Islington, Albury, Southwark, Paddington and Chicago. There are also some Irvingite tracts, other texts and addresses and issues of a newsletter of the Catholic Apostolic Church in England.
There is a single manuscript item being a table giving the full names of the twelve apostles of the Catholic Apostolic Church, their previous occupation, the tribes they represented and other details.
Some of the items are annotated with the names of members of the Cousland family, principally Hugh Cousland (also referred to as Mr Cousland, Mr H. Cousland) of London and later Dudley and James Montgomery Cousland (referred to as J. Cousland, whose name appears on one of the items printed for the Chicago Catholic Apostolic Church). |
| Arrangement | Arranged into three series: materials printed for private circulation by individual or groups of churches; other printed and published materials relating to the Catholic Apostolic Church; manuscript material. |

| Administrative History | Hugh Cousland (1885-1967), a tailor, was born in Glasgow, the son of Hugh and Elizabeth (nee Montgomery). He married Elizabeth Hislop at the Catholic Apostolic Church, St Rollox, Glasgow in 1914 and they shortly afterwards moved to London. The family subsequently moved to 8 Fairview Road, Dudley in the 1920s. His brother, James Montgomery Cousland, an engineer (1882-1951) was also born in Glasgow and emigrated to the United States of America in 1909.
The Catholic Apostolic Church was organized in 1835 under the lead of twelve apostles. The last apostle died in 1901, after which the membership gradually declined.
