| Administrative History | Jesse Collings (1831-1920), was a businessman in and Mayor of Birmingham before taking up his parliamentary career. He was the Liberal MP for Ipswich from 1880-1886 and then returned to Birmingham to become the MP for Bordesley until his retirement in 1918. During his political career he was closely associated with Joseph Chamberlain's program of municipal reform. He was one of the founders in 1869 and Honorary Secretary of the National Education League which campaigned for free elementary education for all children free from religious controls.
