| Administrative History | Philip Callow (1924-2007), novelist, poet and biographer was born in Birmingham, the son of a clerk. He was educated at Coventry Technical College and left when he was fifteen to be apprenticed as a toolmaker. He spent the war years in Leamington Spa and used his experience of wartime deprivations in his later writings. He continued to write in his spare time and in 1956 published his first highly autobiographical novel , 'The hosanna man'. He went on to write a trilogy of novels about working class life in the midlands. 'The story of my desire' continues the characters from the trilogy and draws on his experience of depression during the breakdown of his marriage. Later in his life he turned to writing biographies, one of his subjects being D.H. Lawrence, a major influence on his writing and to whom he has been compared. Callow was an Arts Council writer in residence at Sheffield Polytechnic from 1980-1986 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
