| Administrative History | Edmond William Wace Carlier (1861-1940) was born in Norwich, the only son of Antoine Guillaume Carlier, Officier d'Academie and his wife, Marie. He was educated at King Edward VI School, Norwich, at the Lycee de Valenciennes, France and at Edinburgh University where he gained his M.B, C.M with honours and his M.D. (gold medal). He was also MSc (Birmingham) and F.R.S.E. and F.R.E.S. In 1886 he was appointed assistant to the Professor of Physiology at Edinburgh; in 1894 he became Lecturer on Experimental Physiology and Histology; and in 1899, Professor and examiner in Physiology. In 1899 he was appointed as Professor of Physiology at Mason University College which became University of Birmingham the following year where he stayed until his retirement in 1927. Between 1909 and 1914 he was examiner in Physiology for the first fellowship examination of the Royal College of Surgeons and was a former Honorary Secretary of the Scottish Microscopical Society. He and his wife Hannah (nee Culver) had two sons and one daughter. His daughter, Gwendoline Isobel Maud was a graduate of the University of Birmingham, gaining her BSc in 1920 and MSc in 1922. One of his sons, Stuart Edmond Wace (1899-1962) was an entomologist, with particular interests in epidoptera, hemiptera and coleoptera. He was part-time lecturer in entomology in the Extra Mural Department of the University of Birmingham. The other son was Geoffroy.
Antoine Guillaume Carlier, Edmond's father, was the author of a number of works including 'Further Reflections on Society' (Great Yarmouth: W. D. Burton, 1859); 'Contes et légendes' [in verse] (Paris, 1865); The Legend of the Höne-Fos, and other tales (London: Hamilton, Adams & Co, 1874)

| Acquisition | This collection was presented to the University of Birmingham in 1964 by Carlier's daughter. It was transferred from the Barnes Medical Library to the Special Collections Department in 2000. |
