| Description | Collection of athletics programmes, almost entirely from UK meetings and organised by local clubs or regional organisations. The collection also includes some programmes of events held at festivals where events included egg and spoon races, sack races and football matches. The vast majority of programmes relate to track and field events.
There are sequences of programmes for well-known events such as the AAA Championships. Some programmes include biographical details of competitors, sometimes with accompanying images. There are a number of pre-First World War programmes which advertise professional races featuring the athletes Nat Cartmell, A. B. Postle, C. E. Holway, B. R. Day and Jack Donaldson. These athletes represented America, Australia and Ireland. The collection also includes a programme from the 1908 London Olympic Games.
A considerable number of programmes have been personally annotated with placings and timings. Although a broad range of athletics clubs across England are represented there is significant representation from clubs located in the north of England, E. R. L. Powell having a closer geographical connection to, and involvement with, these clubs. Some programmes include loose inserts which provide accompanying results. |
