Creator NameCardew, Martin H. (b 1927), athlete
Administrative HistoryMartin H. Cardew was born in 1927, the son of William and Cynthia Cardew (nee Scott) and his birth was registered in the borough of Woolwich. His elder brother Kenneth was born in 1924 and his mother was the niece of Sir John Murray-Scott (1847-1912). Murray-Scott was the secretary to the English art collector, and founder of 'The Wallace Collection', Sir Richard Wallace (1818-1890). Letters sent to Murray-Scott and Wallace from members of the British Royal Family can be found at MS176.

Martin Cardew was a one-time member of Harborne Athletic Club but resigned in October 1970 due to the club's inability to raise teams for various championships held during the previous two years. He subsequently joined Halesowen Athletic Club. He was a past president of the Midland Road Walkers Association and held the dubious distinction of being the last man to finish in the final staging of the Tipton to Bridgnorth Road Relay, 1974. In professional life he was a former lecturer in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.
