DescriptionA large sequence of almost 4,000 athletics and sports competition programmes, acquired from a wide variety of different sources, with coverage dating from the late 19th century to the early 21st century.

The sequence has been divided into UK and non-UK programmes, all of which usually list the individual events and the names of competitors. The majority of programmes relate to meetings held in the UK and further details about these programmes can be found at the ATH/Z/1/1 sub-series description.

Both UK and non-UK programmes sometimes carry personal annotations with details of placings and times. The provenance of these programmes is largely unknown and so the names of the individuals who recorded this information is not known. The existence of these manuscript annotations is noted where appropriate. Early programmes also include information about prizes. Some of the programmes relate to a single event, such as relays, road relays and marathons; other programmes are for wider sporting events which include cycling and even horse jumping; and cross country and walking events are well represented in the collection. Many of the programmes also carry advertisements and information about clubs, about competitions and about event sponsors.

These programmes are of very wide interest, not only to those interested in British and European athletics history and to sports statisticians but also to social historians and to family historians. There is potential to use the material to study gender roles, advertising, place, developments and changes to athletics.
