Transcript of Letter from Lawrence Alma-Tadema to Mr Frith, 12 March 1896: My dear Mr. Frith, I should like nothing better than to vote for you next Monday. Unfortunately I am on duty in Birmingham on that day. I shall try to run round at the Athenaeum to put my name down and show some good will at least. Yours sincerely. L Alma Tadema

Administrative HistoryAlma-Tadema laments a commitment in Birmingham, preventing him from voting at his London private member’s club, the Athenaeum. Although the identity of the recipient is unconfirmed, it is likely to be the artist William Powell Frith (1819-1909). Convivial and out-going, Alma-Tadema was an active member of several London clubs. At the Athenaeum he and fellow painter Edward Poynter (1836-1919) renovated the décor of several of the rooms.
