| Title | CMS Committee Instructions to Rio Pongas Missionaries: 26 November 1813: London |
| Extent | 1 doc. |
| Date | 1813 |
| Description | The missionaries are referred to the instructions sent by Butscher and printed in Appendix I to the 13th report of CMS. There should be Sunday preaching in each settlement. Itinerant evangelism should be undertaken during the dry season (women can exert influence in conversation). Communication should be through elder children until the language is acquired and Susu is to be diligently studied daily. They should prepare as quickly as possible in Susu: a grammar, a vocabulary, elementary reading and spelling books and sheets, the New Testament. The printing press must be used. Children should be taught to read Susu. Promising scholars should be trained as teachers and taught to aspire to the Christian ministry. Regular statistics of church members should be kept and accounts of itineraries. Missionaries must consult together about the work and maintain good fellowship and mutual help. Teaching and evangelising are of prime importance. Everything must be done to enlist support at home. The practice of redeeming children by purchase shall stop, as children can be obtained from those liberated from captured smugglers of enslaved people. |
