TitleLetter from Wenzel to Secretary: 29 December 1813: Sierra Leone
Extent1 doc.
Date1813
DescriptionHe gives an account of his journey to Bramia with Renner to meet Butscher, where they met Fernandez and received a reiterated promise of support and protection. Renner took the good news back to Bashia while Butscher and Wenzel went to S. L. to receive the goods brought by the 'Neptune' which were already in Governor Maxwell's store. Wenzel wrote to Sec by Captain Scobell of the 'Thais' and will send a full account after the 'Neptune's' goods have been divided.
Munkge Amara, headman of the Isles de Loss and the opposite mainland, has asked for a missionary settlement and an Arabic bible. He is a Bullom who became a Moslem preacher while in Foulah country. Wenzel thinks that a Christian settlement would prosper in the Isles de Los[s] which have good communications and a pleasant climate.
He intends to build a church and will be glad of a clock and bell. He will leave this letter with Butscher, to forward by HM Sloop the 'Favourite'.
