| Description | He moved from Kakara to the new settlement at Canoffee on 2 May and on 23 Sep was married in S. L. to Mrs. Nylander's sister, Miss Fanny Beverouth. Whilst there and at Banee Island he assisted with the instruction and baptism of 400 'liberated' slaves, willing recruits for the Army and at the marriage of over 30 couples. Three other prizes with another 400 slaves also arrived. Governor Maxwell determinedly harries the slave trade and has established schools for the children who come decently clothed. He gives details of expenses for the wedding, children's clothing and building. He has drawn his salary and children's maintenance to Christmas 1812. He asks for a carpenter's tool-chest, books, maps and globes for teaching arithmetic and geography. He hopes to learn the vernacular and be able to preach. |
