| Title | Letter from Wenzel to Pratt: 5 January 1815: Canoffee |
| Extent | 1 doc. |
| Date | 1815 |
| Description | The anti slave trade activities have filled the people with hate and suspicion of the missionaries: not one attended the church foundation laying. They demanded he should forbid the man-of-war to come up the river. Fernandez arrived just in time to protect him. Some fire raising was done nearby. A meeting of missionaries at Bashia with Butscher and Renner decided that Klein should go to Gambier, the Meisners stay at Canoffee and Mrs. Quast at Bashia.
On 12 Apr Wenzel had the grass cut to stay the progress of an approaching fire which destroyed the Meisner's belongings. He will strive to put up a school and roof the church before the rains. The agreement between government and the slave traders whereby the latter will renounce slave trading in return for a protecting certificate has produced more friendly relations with the missionaries. New prices have been arranged for legitimate trading. Wilhelm has set up the printing press in Bashia and will get instruction in S. L. for its operation. |
