TitleLetter from Mrs. Hartwig to Pratt: [11] March 1815: Sierra Leone
Extent1 doc.
Date1815
DescriptionShe describes the dying condition that Renner found Hartwig in through the deprived way he was living in the Gambier settlement, and his death a week after joining her. The funeral was attended by several men of the Colony and one European woman who stayed to support her. She is well but complains of dim sight.
She describes Mrs. Hughes' influence on board as unbecoming a Christian missionary and making for dissension and strife. Her future is unsettled: she is teaching at S. L. where there is great demand, but another suggestion is that she go to Bashia. Expenses are heavy and income not assured. MacCarthy may make some provision when he returns, but if her health should fail she asks liberty to return to England.
