Title1 June 1816: Sierra Leone: Wenzel to Pratt
Extent1 doc.
Date1816
DescriptionHe set off for S. L. to meet Bickersteth but at the mouth of the Rio Pongas encountered a Spanish slave ship whose captain forced him to go aboard and questioned him. Wenzel told him that another Spanish slaver had been in the river for 4 days and he was then released. On reaching S. L. he informed the Governor of this and he sent out ships to capture the slavers, which was duly accomplished. Wenzel feared that the country people would suspect him of giving information but fortunately Mungke Hati then died and the people were quiet. The Spanish captain did blame him for his capture.
Eight days after Bickersteth's arrival, Wenzel went with him and Nylander to Klein at Kapuru, and thence to Rio Pongas when Bickersteth subsequently came to Rio Pongas it was decided that on account of Wenzel's bodily infirmity he and his family should transfer to Kissy, where he now is.
He gives a justification of his previous spending and requests the Committee's indulgence and assistance in providing what he now needs afresh.
