Description'Private instructions by the Committee in addition to his [Bickersteth] public instructions':
He has the power to suspend or dismiss a missionary if he deems this necessary, and he is to investigate all of Mrs. Klein's charges and the accounts of the missions. He is also to investigate education and vaccination in S. L. and the prospects of the Christian Institution. He should explain to MacCarthy the objects of CMS. Notes are provided on the 4 new schoolmasters.
He should investigate Butscher's trading and property activities and the reports of his having improper relations and being drunk. He should discuss with Nylander the charges against the others, his translations and the question of building at Yongroo, while bringing to Sperrhacken's attention Nylander's charges against him. He must tell Klein that no risks are to be taken on the Isles de Los and discuss his conduct without his wife being present. Mrs. Klein should also be made to discuss her conduct.
Both Renner and Wenzel should be questioned about expenditure and the former be rebuked for his uncharitable manner. Mrs. Renner, however, should be treated kindly. Harrison should be reassured and more learnt about him, while Wilhelm should be questioned about R. Wilkinson and reassured about his fitness for itinerant preaching. He should remonstrate with Hughes about his conduct and also with the native chiefs. Fernandez should be questioned about land. Sense must be made of the contradictory reports about Bashia and Canoffee.
