TitleLetter from Kenneth Macaulay to Zachary Macaulay [copy]: 23 September 1815: Sierra Leone
Extent1 doc.
Date1815
DescriptionAt present the Colony is inefficient for want of European officers for the civil establishment, and he has a very low opinion of the present missionaries. Hirst, the Methodist teacher, was sent by K. Macaulay and Capt. Hyde to Hogbrook, against the wishes of MacCarthy who saw this as an insult to the Established Church. Thomas Hirst has proved indolent to an extreme but is better than nobody. Butscher is utterly inactive but pretends to be building some house at Leicester, and CMS is particularly cursed with a poor body of men in the field. The Rio Pongas mission is a waste of resources. He would prefer efforts to be concentrated on S. L. where there are circa 2500 children needing education. The problem with the Methodists is that, although they are pious men, they seem not to recognise a secular authority unless it is represented by one of their sect. Sutherland, however, is very active in the school despite his health.
