TitleLetter from Butscher to Pratt: 9 December 1815: Sierra Leone
Extent1 doc.
Date1815
DescriptionTwo temporary boys' houses at Leic. Mt. are now finished and an area of 30-40 acres is being cleared to find a site for permanent buildings. He has put in some livestock. The boys there at present are in good care and some of the townspeople go there to pray. He has had the bell put up. He wishes he could spend all his time at Leic. and is perturbed that the new schoolmasters are to be German not English. Germans could be used for craftsmen. Pratt's letter came to late to stop him giving Fernandez his present, but he had retained some articles from it. He did so, not because he thought Fernandez unworthy to receive all but because he believes such presents should be given gradually. He has much to be grateful to Fernandez for and feels that the manner of Appleton's approach to Fernandez was mistaken.
Mrs. Klein has much abused Leigh and Carr, their benefactors at the Isles de Los. She told Nicol that they carried on an illegal trade but when they confronted her with this allegation she could not substantiate it. They berated her for this and her general slovenliness and withdrew about 15 children for the school. Harrison witnessed all of this.
