TitleLetter from Wilhelm to Bickersteth: 12 January 1816: Canoffee
Extent1 doc.
Date1816
DescriptionWith regard to Pratt's instructions that he continue translation, but also conduct itinerant preaching, Wilhelm makes the following points:
If he itinerates he will need attendants to row or carry him. He will have the expense of having to make many gifts. He cannot yet speak Susu and doubts his interpreter's ability. His interpreter would certainly not be prepared to assist with both translation and preaching in the same season. Is not translation the first priority? He would think it best to first address a general gathering of the Susu chiefs and tell them of the preaching mission, rather than just set off and further arouse their suspicions of his language study. Any present to a headman should be a fixed annual amount. Also, how are the missionaries to obtain servants if they cannot redeem children?
Postscript: Having discharged Wilkinson, Wilhelm went to Fernandez to seek help in translation. He offered to help himself, as he had previously assisted Hartwig, but this would mean Wilhelm's going to Bramia. He will wait for Bickersteth's opinion.
