TitleLetter from Nylander to Pratt: 23 January 1816: Yongroo
Extent1 doc.
Date1816
DescriptionHe answers Pratt's questions about the other missionaries as follows:
He knows nothing of Renner's reported excessive drinking. He has heard reports that Butscher engaged in mercenary practice at Goree after the 'Wilding' shipwreck, and did attend public sales in S. L. but apparently only to obtain goods for the settlements. He is well off but there is no evidence of profiteering. The published reports of Bashia are misleading and this probably causes cynicism in the informed traders. It would seem that Bashia does not report home the truth. The marriage of Bangku Hati ['Chate'] [see E3/117] was an unhappy affair, necessitated by impropriety and now broken up.
Nylander cannot believe that the missionaries' houses are sinks of vice and ascribes this to malicious rumour by slave traders. Butscher may have been at fault in not establishing the Gambier settlement but otherwise he is diligent. Missionaries cannot be blamed for children readopting superstition when they leave the settlements. He knows little about Fernandez but thinks that only the Kleins dislike him. He denies that Susu women glory in adultery - there are harsh Susu laws against it.
