| Description | After James Carr's decision not to sell him the house, he agreed to pay £25 p.a. for it and has converted it for his and the boys' use. His scholars now include 8 brought from the Dembia, the son of Joseph Hopkins of S. L., and 2 of William Henry Leigh's sons. He has a promise of 6 more chiefs' sons. He describes a typical day at the school. Despite the expense he is eager to begin an Isles de Los settlement next dry season on a site previously occupied by a trader. Leigh and Carr own all livestock on the island and his is indebted to them for good treatment there. It is even possible that the natives might be persuaded to consider CMS the sole proprieters of the island. He must draw on CMS for the children, a canoe, and work done on the school, but he hopes to obtain all teaching assistance locally. Mrs. Harding and M. Macmillan both died recently. Postscript: Samuel Samo, merchant of Factory Island [see E3/3] wishes to subscribe to the Society. Enclosure: List of children, redeemed and boarding, from Isles de Los and Factory Island. |
