TitleLetter from MacCarthy to Bickersteth: 16 January 1819: Sierra Leone
Extent1 doc.
DescriptionOn Renner's agreeing to baptise boys on his plantation MacCarthy was surprised to receive applications from children who had lived at the Christian Institution for 3 years without baptism. Collier objected to Renner marrying a girl in his charge to a boy from the Institution because only Collier as an ordained Church of England minister ought to marry them. MacCarthy has been assured by the Chief Justice that the Marriage Act does not apply to the Colony. He thinks that Johnson and his fellow workers would be better employed in Christianizing Regents Town than in making excursions.
