TitleLetter from Horton to Pratt: 17 April 1819: Bathurst
Extent1 doc.
Date1819
DescriptionHe explains that he left Leic. Mt. because of the insufficiency of the salary and because of being "uncomfortable" as to the number of masters [sic] he had to attend to. Mrs. Horton's illness occasioned much expense and all European imported goods have 100-150% surcharge put on them by the merchants. Consequently he was acquiring debts and the other missionaries could give him no encouragement.
His record as a schoolmaster will be attested to, but after the Morgans took over the Freetown schools and he was given no other Society position, he was forced to throw himself upon the Governor. He was then given the superintendency of Bathurst Town where his wife now keeps girls' school and he himself takes night school for the boys.
