| Description | He gives a detailed report of their work at Goree. The children's school was very successful but that for adults, whose main occupations he lists, less so. By Jul 1816, when the French arrived, they mustered 119 children but thereafter the school declined. On 15 Feb 1817 the island was formally ceded to the French. A French Catholic priest arrived and he was very critical of their school. Eventually they were forced to give up and sailed for England via Gambia. He feels that all was not wasted but regrets the French arriving just when things were going well. His commitment to evangelism is stronger than ever and he seeks to be employed elsewhere. |
