TitleLetter from Pratt and Bickersteth to Rev. John Collier [copy]: 8 April 1819: London
Extent1 doc.
Date1819
DescriptionThe Committee approves the engaging of William Randle and Johnson's two converts as teachers. George Fox may be retained as a helper for Morgan if Collier thinks his character suitable. Thomas Rock Garnsey has been accepted as a chaplain and will soon join Collier. The Isles de Los would seem the best site for the Gambier mission and perhaps the Kleins might return there.

The Society cannot allow any missionary salary to exceed their prescribed limits (£250 if married, £200 if single), whatever the source. Equally the widowed Mrs. Wenzel's salary must not exceed £50 despite the missionaries' decision. The Committee could only decide as they did with respect to Leic. Mt. school, given the Governor's hostility. Only the church is to be sold to the Governor and the Institution buildings are to be retained to be finished under Bull who is fully qualified to give a liberal education to African youths. It is regretted that Collier has voiced objections to Lutheran missionaries conducting marriage services for Black people. They are perfectly qualified to do so.
