Date1819
DescriptionDespite many problems he has established the Colonial school and the Madras [Chennai] system of education. He has attracted c 350 children and c 180 adults. He proposes a system of native schoolmasters who should be senior monitors in the schools in which they were educated as a training and probationary period. They might then be located in every village with Europeans providing general superintendance, as has been tried in India.
The Governor wishes him to take a new station. He feels that he could leave the Colonial schools to another and perhaps himself take a country station. Despite Collier's disapproval he has already been preaching at Regents Town and Gloucester.
