TitleLetter from Johnson to Pratt and Bickersteth: 7 February 1820: Regents Town
Extent1 doc.
Date1820
DescriptionHe met with a most joyous reception but was appalled when he saw the state Regents Town had fallen into. He heard many greivous stories and can only conclude that Morgan is a deceitful, cruel and ambitious man. Morgan flogged 3 of the women for no apparent reason and on one occasion flogged all of the schoolgirls. He turned round all of Johnson's plans and threw the town into confusion. He reduced wages, probably to ingratiate himself with the governor, and was content that this drove some of the people to move to other towns. He also spoke disrespectfully of Johnson to the Governor. Johnson suspects that MacCarthy intended to send people away to different towns but will not now pursue this plan. Johnson believes that Wilhelm did all in his power to put matters right and has no criticism of him.
Yesterday he married Randle to Rebecca Price. Bull will be moving to Regents Town and Johnson has bought the farm and houses of which he spoke to Bickersteth.
