| Title | Letter from MacCarthy to Pratt and Bickersteth: 4 January 1820: Bathurst River, Gambia |
| Extent | 1 doc. |
| Date | 1820 |
| Description | Since his last visit in 1818 the population and number of permanent buildings in Bathurst have both increased. The location seems very healthy and flies and mosquitos have disappeared. He is optimistic about the prospects for Christianity here despite the rapid spread of Islam. He is, however, very disappointed that CMS cannot find a clergyman to serve as chaplain at Gambia, despite MacCarthy's having procured a liberal salary for the post. Postscript: He visited the Kleins and was satisfied at their progress. |
