DescriptionOn 3 Feb sent Devasagayam and Sooparaya, schoolmaster, to open new English school at Karekal; opened with 8 pupils, three Brahmins, four Suttras and one Roman Catholic; some parents promised to send children later "when their superstition about the stars will permit"; native commissioner has provided house for school; has examined schools in Tranquebar, English with 78 pupils and Tamil with 259; some children are absent in summer, helping their families with farming or weaving; other schools make good progress; grant of £50 from SPCK will help in repairs and additions; has written report to Colonel Macaulay and hopes grant from CMS will be continued [copy extract]
