TitleLetter from Pratt to Thomason, Calcutta: 22 March 1813: London
Extent1 doc.
DescriptionQuotes letter of 9 Mar 1812 [see also /4] relating to application of annual grant of £250 for appointment of readers of scriptures; Corresponding Committee reduced in numbers by deaths of Martyn and Brown; Thomason and Udny urged to make up numbers and establish an Auxiliary CM Society in India; Earl of Moira has promised to support CMS in India; he is vice-president of Bible Society and would have been to CMS but is was thought expedient only to ask for his general support; there is little doubt but that he would patronise the society; in connection with the renewal of the East India Company's charter last year a deputation from CMS waited on Lord Liverpool; hopes that something effectual will be done, probably "by an ecclesiastical establishment with full toleration to Dissenters"; copies of Buchanan's book have been sent to most members of Parliament; hopes that by this means CMS will gain "favour with some of the highest ecclesiastical orders. You know well the difficulties under which we labour in this respect"; 100 copies of the 'Missionary Register' will be allocated to him monthly; is going by the night mail to Bristol, where with Messrs. Scott, Woodd, Burn and Budd, a public meeting is to be held to start the CM Association there [copy]
