Description | Abadullah was baptised at Colsterworth [Lincolnshire] by C.'s father, with CMS approval, in Nov 1816; he failed to secure a pension from government, through Sir G. Ouzley, whom he had known in Persia and C. promised CMS would pay him a salary if he became an evangelist, or C. would obtain temporal employment for him; he wanted the salary of a European missionary, but CMS Committee rejected any connection with him; CMS paid for his passage to India and C. added £40 to this; Calcutta Committee found him unfit to serve as a missionary and he declined employment under Mr. Money, collector at Patna; C. invited A. to accompany Adlington and himself on their river-voyage to Benares, and when Adlington left for Agra A. demanded to accompany him at a salary of 100 rupees per month; he became so offensive that C. parted company with him, whilst he threatened to proceed overland to England to claim his 100 rupees per month, and return to India "a great man" [copy] |
