TitleLetter from Corrie to Thomason: 9 February 1818: Benares
Extent1 doc.
Date1818
DescriptionOn the way to Benares he visited Buglipour, where the Roman Catholics are very poor and neglected; would Calcutta Corresponding Committee be willing to supply the salary of a schoolmaster for the children?; at Buxar great desire exists for religious instruction; Bowley is spending a week there to see what can be arranged; at Chunar the number of Europeans and of native Christians attending divine service is increasing and there is a free school; Bowley has spent his own money as well as his efforts here, but larger premises are urgently needed; C. would prefer these to be provided rather than reimbursing him for the original purchase; there is great need at Benares for a school for the boys attached to the native battalions, and for the native Christians; a bungalow is available for purchase where Adlington could be installed, and the British would probably help should the Calcutta Corresponding Committee approve the plan [duplicate copy]
