TitleLetter from Thomason to Rev. John Owen: February 1817: Calcutta
Extent1 doc.
DescriptionHindustani and Persian testaments are printed, and the psalms ready; Martyn made a rough draft of this latter before he left Shiraz, and Meer Suyd Ali brought it with him; T. and Ali have been revising it, comparing it with the Hebrew; T. is now ending Ali's employment, as his knowledge is inadequate for translation work; T. himself has not the leisure; asks British and Foreign Bible Society to send out Lee to work in India as their translator, where he will better acquire the idiom and be more useful than in England; the Old Testament versions in Hindustani and Persian would then progress; Mr. Robinson in Bombay is much interested in translation, but is too far away for close collaboration [extract: copy]
