Title
Letter from Major Munro to Rev. M. Thompson: 7 August 1815: Courtallum
Extent
1 doc.
Date
1815
Description
Wishes to attach Anglican clergyman to Syrians in Travancore, preferably Norton; he should go first to Quilon, where he might learn Malayalim and Syrian Christian customs; Munro would give him support and he might be at M.'s disposal; during M.'s absence from Travancore certain nairs and brahmins showed animosity to Christians; this will convince the Christians of the advantages of having the protection of an English clergyman; M. will to Quilon early in Sep and wants to obtain good Malayalim translation of the Syrian scriptures; "the unfortunate difference between him [the Syrian bishop] and the ramban opposes many difficulties to the execution of all the plans which I have had in view for the benefit of the Syrian Christians" [extract].
