DescriptionHas been much occupied with boat-building; hopes soon to have a church; Mr. W[o]lcott has subscribed 100 rupees and 2000 bricks, the Resident has promised his support and it is hoped to start building so as to get it roofed before next May or Jun, the rainy season; N. proposed as site, the ground where his house stands, as there is ample room for a church and cemetery; the sircar will make it over to the Society; N. wrote to Thompson for lamps and other necessary extras and asks Pratt to send out a good hand-organ; the church at Cochin is to be repaired; the metropolitan died 24 Nov; the Resident needs men as judges or magistrates, at least 16 immediately; these things are to be kept confidential as the Madras government is not well disposed towards missionary exertions; Mr. and Mrs. Bailey arrived at Cochin 16 Nov; is glad to hear the dean of Wells may be made a bishop; was sorry that Bailey brought no letters from home; books sent to India should not be half-bound as the humidity affects the paper, the best binding is Russia; asks for his copy of 'Paradise Lost' to be sent; gives list of 18 books taken by Greenwood and Schroeter from the stock N. received in London asks for copies of 'The London Midwifery'; notes that church is intended to be 80' x 40' exclusive of the 10' wide verandah round it.
