TitleLetter from Norton to Pratt: 7 April 1818: Allepie
Extent1 doc.
Date1818
DescriptionGlad to hear of missionaries coming out, but sorry that one is a Lutheran, as Syrians notice differences in dress (the Lutherans not wearing surplices), and are disposed to be unreasonable about such matters; now has 9 children for intended institution; has been appointed superintendent of the Allepie court, the salary is Rs.100 per month which will support his wife and children "without any additional salary from the Society"; the appointment will give excellent opportunities for learning the various languages, manners and customs of the people; grieved that Dawsons have had to return to England; cannot write fully and freely when communications have to go via the Madras Committee; doubts whether Thompson would know any more about N.'s mission station, being 600 miles away, than the committee in London.
