DescriptionSyrians are in a deplorable state of ignorance and vice, but still have some virtues; for the moment must act in harmony with metran; M. has arranged for Bailey to pay metran 50 rupees each month, from the college fund; metran co-operates most closely with Bailey; execution of future plans depends on education of students in college; funds are now sufficient for 45 students and two teachers; another missionary is urgently needed for the college and a plan of study should be approved by CMS; hope to abolish chatams as also the masses and seven sacraments; suggests setting up printing press in college; rajah of Cochin has presented Rs.5000 to Christian establishments, which has been given to the Southern mission under Mr. Mead; M. has found a house for Mead at Nagracoil, has great hopes of mission; an English and Tamil school should be established there; both Mead and Norton have accepted office of second or Christian judge at Nagracoil and Allepie, on a salary of Rs.300 each; they propose giving up their CMS salaries (copy).
