DescriptionThanks for supplies of books etc.; sent John Devasagayam to Negapatam at the beginning of July to examine the schools; all are satisfactory; new school at Niravy has 65 pupils; school at Tirumaleirasenpattanam has increased pupils from 50 to 105 and the schoolhouse needs to be enlarged; has just completed examination of all schools.

Has obtained ground in the great bazaar for school and Resident has promised to obtain rani's patronage; discussed with him the affair of the Roman Syrian Church buildings and, N. says in confidence, Resident thinks of restoring the disputed churches to Roman Catholics, as a favour, and assist the Syrians to have new churches instead

Sends extracts of letters; press is about to start work; will begin with Tamil version of Genesis and tracts, including the 'The Warning' about the cholera epidemic; "Mr. Norton is all we could wish for now ….. we see the advantage of admonishing with tenderness; I wish we may see the same happy effect on the minds of Mr. Rhenius and Mr. Schmid - but I fear otherwise"
