Description | Report of six months' work: mention assistants: Moottoosamy, schoolmaster at Vengadamangalam; Aroonasala Moodelliar, schoolmaster at Madras; Amoordappen, schoolmaster in Koorookapetty; Abraham, schoolmaster in Madras; Tiroovengad Asarien, inspector of schools at Canjeravam; Rayappen and Sandappen, catechists; Ramasamy, schoolmaster at Chingleput; Christian, reader; two recent developments have been: 1) the establishment of a public English school by a "a few respectable heathen", in which the catechist Rayappen was asked to take part and has made conditions such as keeping the Sabbath, saying the Lord's Prayer when beginning and ending school, using English testament as school book and not allowing days of new and full moon as festivals, to which they have consented; 2) a society has been formed for translating their sacred books including the Vedas from Sanscrit into the vernacular; the missionaries have published 'Satya Pracasam', an address to the Brahmins in Canjevaram, providing divine inspiration of Bible; an address against caste has also been published. |
