TitleLetter from Rhenius to Pratt: 18 January 1819: Madras
Extent1 doc.
Date1819
DescriptionDaughter Theodosia died 22 Nov 1818; asked Corresponding Committee to pay the expenses (£8) which they refused alleging salary should be sufficient; considers married missionary's salary in Madras needs to be more than £200; has talked to Mr. Pritchett of the London Missionary Society working at Vizagapatam about salaries as Committee member had said his salary was less than Rhenius', but this proved incorrect; Pritchett agreed that expenses of living in Madras were greater; relationships with Committee sadly continue unchanged; they wish to command, comparing mission activity to a general and his army; if Thompson is "the soul of the whole committee" this would explain all as "I have experienced him ..... to be a very high-looking spirit, that cannot bear contradiction".
