TitleLetter from Rev. Benjamin Bailey to Thompson: 6 May 1819: Cottayam
Extent1 doc.
Date1819
DescriptionAsks if Baker may remain at Cottayam as the mission is "a very extensive and important one"; the area covered by the Syrian churches is 150 by 30 miles; the church has only recently had protection and suffers now from harrassment by those who are jealous of them; the presence of a European stops these disorders; Cottayam has a Brahmin college and a newly established Sanscrit college besides the CMS one; as one missionary's time is largely employed in translation work it is impossible for the other to superintend the college and visit the churches; Cochin, although important for its half caste population and small colony of Jews is not as important as Alleppie [copy].
