After being accepted as a CMS missionary, he went out to Madras, CMS South India Mission, 27 June 1841.
In 1842, his service with CMS ended when he was appointed Professor at the college run by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. In 1852, he was re-appointed by CMS; he continued to undertake translational work for CMS until he returned to England 20 August 1859 and resigned from mission service. Seymer was blind.
