Physical DescriptionThey are numbered [in red ink] for each year [from 1 January] and from 1887 to 1924 those originating in Great Britain are marked 'South India' or 'S. I.'. On 10 July 1924 the Telegu and Tinnevelly missions were set up and South India changed its name to Madras. For 1924 there are therefore two sets of numbered letters: 1-119/1924 'S.I.' (to committee meeting of July 1924) and 1-41/1924 'M.' (from September committee meeting). From 1924 to 1934 the letters are marked 'M.'

The date of receipt of the papers is also noted and often the initials of Secretaries and other headquarters' staff dealing with material. Some items, notably finance correspondence were removed as soon as they had been entered on the precis [see precis books /P], others were removed in the normal course of administrative work. Usually in these cases a note of the number of the item, plus the initials of the staff member and the department, remains in the packet
