Physical DescriptionThe archive reference numbers for the pre-1880 papers have been marked in pencil on the back of each individual item [e.g. C PE/O 1/22]. The post-1880 papers are each individually marked in red ink. This number, plus the year, constitutes the reference for each item [e.g. G2 PE/1900/47]. G2 PE is missing hundreds of numbers [consult in-house finding aid for details].
Administrative HistoryWork in Persia was begun in 1869 when Robert Bruce, CMS missionary in North India, visited Isfahan on his way back to India from England He stayed at Julfa and in 1875 the Society took over his work. Kerman was occupied in 1897, Yazd in 1898 and Shiraz in 1900. Dr. Bruce was superintending missionary until his retirement in 1893, his oversight including the work begun in 1883 in Baghdad.
