DescriptionPrimarily comprising volumes and files of incoming correspondence 1846-1865, received before the Candidates Department was established, and letter books of outgoing correspondence 1856-1913. The letter books include a small sequence of letters from the Home Preparation Union Secretaries 1910-1913. This series also includes files of incoming and outgoing correspondence during Geoffrey John Rogers time as Candidates Secretary [1942-1950] relating to a broadcast appeal and private and confidential matters 1942-1950.

The correspondence consists of letters to and from prospective candidates, candidates, referees, interviewers and others. Incoming letters include, for example, enquiries concerning regulations and procedure and candidates 'offer of service' letters annotated with cross references to committee meetings at which they were discussed. The outgoing correspondence includes cover letters that were sent enclosing application forms, replies to enquiries about application criteria and procedures, letters explaining practical arrangements for interviews, confirming or declining offers of service, explaining decisions that have been made and the role of the Home Preparation Union etc.
