/1: 23 September 1844: apologises for delay in writing; is making good progress with cure.
/2: 29 January 1845: continues to take cure; has visited Tábingen; has been asked about a book on Lutheran church theology 1504 from the Royal University Library which was sent to him in Malta about two months after he left the island; the book is said to have been put in the mission library which has now been sent back to England.
/3: 29 August 1845: reports on health and work; the Gustav Adolph Association has had its anniversary at Stuttgart; many institutions have been founded recently for work amongst the poor and for children with severe hearing impairment; Dr Hoffmann of Basel has been to Winnenthal to take the waters.
/4: 31 December 1845: the book [from the Royal University Library] has reached him; sends extract from circular sent by Dr Hoffmann at Basel about the Protestants and Roman Catholics in Germany called the 'Friends of Light'.
/5: Postscript (only): 25 December 1846: reports on the St Chrischona Institution of which he has been asked to take charge for some months; describes developments he hopes to implement.
/6: 14 January 1847: refers to the St Chrischona Institution.
/7: 23 April 1847: reports on activities at the St Chrischona Institution; the course takes two to three years; is considering staying at St Chrischona instead of returning to mission work under CMS; asks for advice.
/8: 22 March 1848: detailed report on activities at the St Chrischona Institution; has had 12 students; his wife is not well; thanks for two cases of books recently arrived which were not the ones he was expecting; suggests extension of Institution's work.
/9: 24 May 1848: wife has died; his two children in England will be brought up by his brother-in-law Rev Wyndham C. Madden of Fareham, Hampshire.
