Description/1: 25 October 1825: describes journey from London to Rotterdam including stop at Cologne with Count and Countess de la Lippe; have settled in at Basel; Mrs Jetter 'has no great difficulty to keep up any conversation with the friends as almost all speak French and some a little English'; reports on six young men whom Pratt required for a possible mission to China; the course of studies at Basel is to be extended from four to five years.
/2: 31 October 1825: sends extract [not enclosed] of Basel proceedings; includes comments relating to August Dittrich's account of of tribes in the Caucasus; Blumhardt asks for confidential report on five brethren about to leave England as he has not heard from Pearson at the CM Institution; sends financial account for journey from London to Basel.
/3: Letter to Pratt, dated 20 December 1825: sends information provided by Blumhardt regarding missionary activity of Protestant Missionary Society at Basel describing three divisions of missionary operations: amongst German emigrants north of the Black Sea and Tartars; at Karass and Madehar; Shushi beyond Caucasus.
/4: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 11 January 1826: sends letter by Haensel who is coming to London; is taking Haensel's place as tutor of English at Basel until a replacement can be found; Mrs Jetter has heard from Mrs Wilson with news of India; young Mr Kennedy has succeeded in obtaining a missionary, Mr Morris having arrived to establish schools (not far from Mr Wilkinson); urges Bickersteth to visit Basel.
/5: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 29 March 1826: has been ill; quotes extract of letter from Reichardt at Calcutta [Kolkata] relating to his work and also relating to Deerr and Perowne.
/6: Letter to Professor Lee at Cambridge, dated 12 April 1826: encloses list [not present] of books and manuscripts owned by the late Rev Benedict La Roche, which he had brought back from Calcutta [Kolkata]; some have been sent to Leipzig, offers remainder to Lee.
/7: Letter to Coates, dated 14 July 1826: relates to books of Benedict La Roche; comments on alleged Universalism at Basel Institution.
/8: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 30 September 1826: comments on attitude of Roman Catholic church to Protestant seceders in a place not far from Stuttgart.
/9: Dated 31 October 1826: Blumhardt has suggested they live in Stuttgart as it is not only cheaper (and Mrs Jetter is expecting a baby in February), but they have forfeited their citizenship by living abroad and cannot therefore provide the necessary testimonials from their place of birth which they need if they are to stay in Basel; they need to find an unfurnished lodging; postscript from Mrs Jetter to Miss Hart asking for linen they left at Islington.
/10: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 25 November 1826: reports on taking lodgings and health [much of letter edited, most likely by CMS clerk for Committee or publication].
/11: Letter to Coates, dated 7 January 1827: thanks for Committee's financial help; asks about possibility of employment with the Society.
/12: Letter to Coates, dated 20 January 1827: introduction for Daniel Schlatter, missionary to the Tartars.
/13: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 17 March 1827: reports birth of daughter who died the next day; describes post-mortem; reports on own health.
/14: Letter to Coates, dated 30 March 1827: sends account of expenses.
/15: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 25 June 1827: again asks about possibility of working for CMS in England.
/16: Letter to Coates, dated 1 November 1827: asks for English books and a cookery book: the edition with engravings of various joints.
/17: Letter to Bickersteth, dated 10 March 1828: relates to health.
/18: Letter to Coates, dated 19 April 1828: asks for Mr Northover to send him three copies of a mercantile letter-writer (for his English pupils).
/19: Letter to Coates, dated 5 May 1828: concerning financial matters.
/20: Letters, addressed to Coates, from Jetter and wife, H. [Harriet], 17 June 1828: Harriet Jetter reports safe arrival of their boxes; has had introduction to Queen Dowager and other members of the Royal Family; Jetter writes that the boxes of his Bengali books should not have been sent but offered to Islington Institution; a chest of drawers also came which was not theirs.
/21: Letter to Coates, dated 3 December 1828: returned safely to Stuttgart 14 October; daughter born 15 November; he and his wife are happy to accept offer of work in the Nilgherry Hills; Brother Kugler arrived in Stuttgart 24 November.
