Was at Basel Institution in 1827 but left feeling 'totally unfit for the missionary-call' and returned to parents at Derendingen near Tubingen; studied theology at Tubingen 1830-1834 and then served a curacy near Tubingen (vicar Mr Colb at Wolfhausen) before becoming tutor to a family in Kirchheim; his friend Fjellstedt had told him that CMS was considering a mission in Western Australia and applies for that or any other post.
