DescriptionLargely from C. F. Schlienz of St Chrischona [Basel], J. Josenhans and W. Hoffmann of the Basel Institution and CMS supporters up to 1847 and also from other missionary societies thereafter. Including letters sent from countries in Western Europe and North America, Apia, Auckland, Australia, Baghdad, Batavia, Cairo, Colombo, Ceylon [Sri Lanka], Accra, Fernando Po [Bioko], [India], Jamaica, Jerusalem, Mauritius, Monrovia, Onitsha, St Helena, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tobago, West Indies [the Caribbean], and Yedo. Although predominantly from overseas correspondents, there is some correspondence concerning British missionaries sent from within the UK.

Includes reports of local work; correspondence about language work, CMS publications, and proposals for the development of mission work overseas; letters written to alert the CMS to areas in need of missionaries; responses to CMS financial appeals and requests for financial support from CMS. Also a few letters from, and concerning, missionaries, prospective missionary wives and prospective missionary candidates including offer of service letters.

The letters are endorsed with clerk's annotations giving the date, name and location of the correspondent and marked with the date of receipt and a brief record of action taken including dates of committee meetings at which the letter was considered.
