| Extent | 3 items |
| Date | 1859 |
| Description | Dated 31 March. Refers to Lieb and Flad; also to Haussmann's attempts to write Hausa language in Arabic characters: 'To me a wonderful problem is to be solved as regards the African dialects, tinged with the Arabic. Still clearer this is staring into my face in reading and analysising the Galle language. A multitude of ancient Arabic words jump up like dolphins out of the ocean showing what wonderful influence the Semitic dialects had in the formation of that language too'; encloses copies of the Lord's Prayer in Hausa, one with an explanation and one without. |
